An influential leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) and its General Secretary for 13 years, Comrade Harkishan Singh Surjeet died on 1 August 2008 at the age of 92. At the Memorial Meeting held in Southall on 30 August, Harpal Brar, speaking on behalf of the Communist Party of Great Britain (Marxist-Leninist), paid particular tribute to his courageous stand against the Khalistan movement, the importance he placed on the need for communists to study, and his ever present willingness, notwithstanding differences, to debate and work for greater cooperation.
