Tribute to Comrade Jasbir Kaur Jouhl

Comrade Jasbir’s untimely death at the age of only 49 has been a great loss not only to her family but also to the cause of women’s emancipation in Britain. She was a devotedly active member of the Indian Workers’ Association (GB), in which capacity she worked tirelessly both for more women to become involved in political work and for the men in that organisation to adapt their style of work to make participation of women easier. Jasbir raised just criticism of the IWA(GB) leadership at branch and central level for not making serious efforts to involve more women in its work, a criticism that the organisation has taken on board.

Her dearest wish in the last weeks of her life was that all her friends and comrades would pledge to work to their utmost for equality of opportunities for all, irrespective of gender, race, disability, ethnicity, nationality, caste and religion; and to work for peace, social justice and an end to exploitation of man by man.

Comrade Jasbir was snatched away from us by breast cancer, and comrades and friends are urged in her memory to make donations to Breast Friends of Sutton Coldfield who are working to help to save the lives of other brave young women.

LALKAR sends its sincerest condolences to Jasbir’s husband, Jagwant Jouhl, to their children and other members of the family, as well as her friends and comrades. She was a friendly person with a lively disposition and concern for ordinary people. She will be much missed.
